More young people than ever are engaging in tackling the climate and ecological crises. We had lots of amazing pledges this year but let's take a look at those that stood out! 

WINNER: Euan, 14, in Winkleigh

Euan has been volunteering in Winkleigh as part of his Duke of Edinburgh Award. Euan planted saplings, cleared a lot of brambles, put up dormice boxes, piled up loose wood to create log piles and attended to other conservation/maintenance jobs. Euan also attended a litter pick in Exeter (image below!)

Kim, member of the Winkleigh Biodiversity Group, says: "In that time he has helped us by mowing the grass paths with a small petrol mower, to allow access to the area by members of the public and to increase the numbers of wildflowers in the shorter grass. He assisted in planting trees, including the alder buckthorn we had purchased (for the Brimstone butterflies). He also assisted in installing two dormice boxes in the hedgerow bank."

Euan is a real asset to his community and is a worthy winner of this award! 

COMMENDABLE PLEDGES 

Ryan

Ryan installed a bird nesting place on a large tree in their front garden and made sure any feathered visitors have plenty to eat from putting up bird feeders! Ryan also put a bird feeder in their back garden but a squirrel got there before any birds managed to! They also put a small home for insects in their back garden and are making sure it doesn't get disturbed too much. Well done, Ryan!
