Commitment Updates

24.10.22

Dormice

Mitigated impact on the dormouse population with a Natural England dormouse licence that included the following mitigation:

•         Advanced planting prior to vegetation clearance and construction for the widening side of 11km of the A361.

•         During construction dead hedge (rows of brash from clearance) is created in areas where clearance is undertaken and advanced planting is not yet established, providing a corridor and nesting sites for dormice.

•         152 dormouse boxes installed in retained habitats to provide extra locations for nesting.

•         Dormouse bridge crossing at West Buckland creating more connectivity and potential for the population to expand to suitable habitat in the wider areas of the scheme.

Bats

•         Lighting design has ecological input in areas identified as bat corridors reducing light spill.

•         Bat boxes are installed to mitigate the tree clearance, trees had suitable features for roosting but none contained bats during surveys.

Otters and badgers

•         Enhancement of crossings include larger otter ledge, light wells along a culvert that is being extended and fencing to encourage large mammals to go under the road.

•         Monitoring in the areas that are identified as having otter and badger potential is undertaken and continues in the 5 year aftercare period.

Reptiles and Amphibians

•         Two Hibernacula’s have been constructed to provide refuge and hibernation habitat to reptiles and amphibians.

•         Reptile mats were installed across the scheme to attract and collect reptiles prior to works. These were then place in retained habitat or the hibernacula’s.

Other species:

•         Any species found were removed and placed into suitable retained habitat away from the works. To date species that have been moved are: Hedgehogs, voles, frogs, toads and invertebrates.

•         Birds nests are monitored until chicks are fledged, green light is then given to site to continue works.

Planting:

During construction dead hedge (rows of brash from clearance) is created in areas where clearance is undertaken and advanced planting is not yet established, providing a corridor and nesting sites for dormice.

Solar panels

Wherever possible permanent LED illuminated signs installed along the new carriageway will be energised by the use of solar panels.

Power to temporary mobile tower lighting at junctions and for night shift working is provided by solar panels charging battery packs backed up by HVO fuelled generators.

Recycling materials:

Woodchip Donations for forest gardens and pathways to :

·      South Molton Primary School x 2

·      Landkey Primary

·      Lampard School x 2

·      Kingsley School

·      South Molton Remembrance Garden

Planings :

The works require approximately 10,000  tonnes of existing carriageway surfacing to be planed off. This material will be transported to the quarry operated by the company laying the new tarmacadam surfacing where it will be processed for re-use.

15% of the processed material will then be introduced to the tarmacadam mix for relaying in lower layers of the carriageway tarmacadam construction.

The remaining 85% of the planings will be utilised in tarmacadam carriageways for new build projects such as housing estate roadways and greenfield highway projects where no existing surfacing is present.

Waste surface Planing (200 tons) donated to Swimbridge Parklands for recycling to make pathway for their parklands walk. Enabling wheelchair and pushchair access.

Electric Vans

Our Journey to Net Zero Carbon – Introducing our EV Vans. We have introduced a fleet of electric vans into the business. This has followed the introduction of Electric Site Vehicles and we will soon be welcoming a number of Electric Cars for our staff. We are having two Electric vehicles on the NDLR. This investment is central to our commitment to achieve Net Zero Carbon which will be outlined in our new Sustainability Strategy that will be released very soon.
